Master of Science in Data Science

This program is pending approval by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). Students may apply now, but final admission is contingent upon SCHEV approval.

The Master of Science (MS) in Data Science gives you the advanced skills and experience that fast-growing fields are actively hiring for, preparing you to step into roles that demand sharper analysis, stronger technical ability, and deeper problem-solving.  Students on this pathway complete the degree in 30 credit hours (as short as one year) - or, for current undergraduates, through an accelerated pathway that lets you double-count select courses and build on your existing work - so you can advance toward your career goals.  We also offer a 36 credit hour, research based Masters in Data Science which you can learn more about here.

Who It's For

Recent college graduates and professionals who have already completed a bachelor’s degree and want a focused, one-year path to advanced data skills and stronger career prospects.   Current W&M undergraduates who are ready to begin graduate-level work early and want a cost- and time-efficient way to earn their MS, with the ability to double-count select courses toward both degrees.

How Long it Takes

A full-time, residential, 30-credit program designed to be completed in one year, with flexible pacing options for students who prefer part-time study.  Up to half of the required credits can be completed during your undergraduate studies, reducing the remaining graduate workload and shortening the overall time to degree.

Background

For students with some limited exposure to programming and statistics. Our first two courses are designed to provide a strong foundation and bring everyone to a shared starting point before moving into advanced material. For students who have completed DATA 301 by the end of their junior year, maintain at least a 3.0 overall GPA, and are ready for a more advanced academic challenge during their senior year.

How To Apply

Apply through our online admissions portal. Submit your application by February 15 for Early Decision, or by May 1 for Regular Decision; admission notifications follow after each round.

Current W&M undergraduates apply to the Bachelor-to-Master’s Accelerated Pathway (BMAP) during their junior year through our online form. Admission to the BMAP allows you to begin taking approved graduate courses in your senior year - courses that can double count toward both degrees. After entering the BMAP, you work with the Data Science graduate advisor to select which courses will double count.

What You'll Gain

The MS in DS at W&M gives you the depth, versatility, and hands-on experience that employers expect from emerging data professionals. Develop the analytical and technical tools to solve real problems, guided by faculty who work closely with you from your first course through your capstone. Along the way, you build a portfolio that shows your abilities and connect with networks that lead to internships, research opportunities, and full-time roles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What background do I need to succeed in the Masters in Data Science?
A basic familiarity with programming and statistics is required, with the curriculum being designed to bring students from different starting points to a common foundation early on.

Can current W&M undergraduates begin the Masters early?
Yes. Through the Bachelor-to-Master’s Accelerated Pathway (BMAP), qualified students can take approved graduate courses in their senior year and double count them toward both degrees.

Do I need to apply separately if I am in the Accelerated Pathway?
Yes. Admission to the accelerated pathway (BMAP) allows you to take double-counted courses, but you must still submit the standard graduate application in your senior year to enter the Masters program formally.

Are classes in person or online?
Courses are delivered residentially (in person) only.  We anticipate launching our online offerings in the Fall of 2027.

Is prior research experience required?
No. Students interested in research opportunities can work with faculty on projects once enrolled. We also offer a 36 credit hour Masters in Data Science pathway that is focused on preparing students for research, which includes a thesis option.
