Distinguished Thesis and Dissertation Awards
Overview
The Distinguished Thesis and Dissertation Awards recognize exemplary graduate research that significantly advances the student's discipline. These awards were established by the Graduate Studies Advisory Board (GSAB) in 2004–2005.
Award Categories & Amounts
- Distinguished Thesis Award – $500
- Distinguished Dissertation Award – $1,000
- Notable Dissertation Award – $500 (as merited)
Eligibility (CDSP Students)
Students earning graduate degrees with a thesis or dissertation in August 2025, January 2026, or May 2026 are eligible for the 2025–26 award cycle. August 2025 graduates in CDSP disciplines who were conferred under Arts & Sciences are eligible for the CDSP awards.
Nomination Process
Students must be nominated by their thesis or dissertation advisor. Departments may submit an unlimited number of nominations.
Required Materials in one combined PDF file
- Signed Nomination Form (download the fillable PDF) by Director of Graduate Studies.
- Nomination Letter from advisor.
- Recommendation Letter from second faculty member.
Remember to submit Items #1-3 above in a combined PDF file.
Additionally, the final thesis/dissertation must be submitted to ETD by April 24, 2026. The CDSP Dean’s Office will access the ETD and distribute materials for review.
Deadline
All nomination materials (items #1-3 above) must be received by April 17, 2026 at 4:00 PM.

Purpose and Impact for CDSP
This award aligns with the GSAB’s mission to strengthen graduate education, support professional development, and elevate the visibility of CDSP. Graduate research in CDSP is essential to William & Mary’s standing as a research institution.
