Degree Pathways
Discover Your Academic Pathway
At William & Mary, possibility isn't an abstract idea—it's a roadmap. Whether you're captivated by quantum mysteries, inspired by big data, or eager to engineer solutions that shape society, our four partner departments—Applied Science, Computer Science, Data Science, and Physics—offer flexible, future-proof programs that launch bold careers and groundbreaking research. Dive into the pathway that sparks your curiosity, then customize it with minors, accelerated master's options, and interdisciplinary tracks designed for impact.
Applied Science
Minor • M.S. • Ph.D.
Use the full toolkit of modern science to solve real-world problems that stretch across biology, chemistry, neuroscience, mathematics, and engineering. In our collaborative labs you might design bio-inspired materials, model pandemic dynamics, or invent smarter medical sensors—often alongside nearby national research facilities. Students can:
- Minor in Applied Science (Bioengineering or Materials Science & Engineering tracks).
- Pursue an M.S. that fuses coursework with hands-on research.
- Continue to a cutting-edge Ph.D. and contribute new knowledge across disciplines.
Computer Science
Major (B.S. or B.A.) • Minor • M.S. • Ph.D.
Ask—and answer—the fundamental question: What can (efficiently) be automated? From AI and cybersecurity to high-performance computing, you'll build algorithms, craft elegant code, and rethink the architecture of tomorrow's machines. Highlights include:
- Flexible B.S./B.A. majors and a popular minor.
- A 4 + 1 accelerated M.S. for W&M undergrads.
- Stand-alone M.S. and research-intensive Ph.D. programs.
- Access to industry-sponsored projects, hack-a-thons, and world-class faculty who publish in top venues with their students.
Data Science
Major (B.S.) • Minor • Ph.D. Track
Turn raw information into powerful insight. Our program equips you with statistical rigor, machine-learning savvy, and the ethical framework employers demand. Pair Data Science with virtually any major or minor, or leap into doctoral work through the Ph.D. Data Science track.
- B.S. major and minor designed to pair with nearly any majors, even if you have no programming or math background.
- Doctoral-level research opportunities at the intersection of artificial intelligence and real-world impact—including the physical sciences, environmental modeling, healthcare, and large-scope social analytics.
- Career pipelines to tech, consulting, government, and NGOs.
Physics
Major (B.S.) • Dual Degree • Minor • Ph.D.
If understanding the universe lights you up, our Physics community will feel like home. Explore everything from quantum materials and optics to plasma-based fusion to real-world applications, to the subatomic world at Jefferson Lab, right down the road. Choose your route:
- B.S. tracks: Standard Physics, Pre-Med Physics, or Engineering Physics & Applied Design (EPAD).
- Dual-Degree Engineering Program with Columbia University (3 + 2 or 4 + 2).
- M.S. and research-driven Ph.D. with world-class faculty mentorship.
- State-of-the-art makerspaces, research labs in quantum optics and many other areas, and access to international research collaborations.
